It’s that time of the year where many of us here in America celebrate our time together with family and friends. In November last year I was still in denial over the election, but at this point I have entered the final stage of grief: acceptance. Yet even with this realization, no day passes that I am not outraged by your words and actions.
However, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, instead of raging about all you have done wrong, I am going to share the top five aspects of your presidency for which I am thankful.
#1 – The wall
Among your largest campaign promises was the building of a wall between the United States and Mexico. Not only is this ridiculous project unfinished, it has not even started. Better still, Mexico still refuses to pay for this, as many of us knew would happen. I am thankful each time I see more about how this guarantee is failing so hugely.
#2 – Travel ban
With a sweep of your pen, you decided who can and cannot enter this country. No matter how you attempted to dance around it, the purpose was clear: to keep Muslims out. Never mind that no legitimate reason was present, you wanted it to happen. Your desire is now tied up in the court system, and while it has by no means disappeared completely, your wish is not the country’s command. I am thankful that our courts seek justice for people despite what you deem appropriate.
#3 – Transgender troops
Another tweet storm showed your lack of knowledge and overt prejudice against those different than you. The claim (out of absolutely nowhere!) that transgender people can no longer serve in the United States military baffled and angered me and countless others. Protesters raised their voices again and research showed that your “reasoning” was incorrect. Immediately this idea was brought to the courts and you were blocked. I am thankful that all who want to serve our country may do so.
#4 – Repeal and replace Obamacare
Ah yes – this should be so simple, you thought. Yet here we are, thankfully, continuing with the Affordable Care Act as part of our country. I know that facts are not your strong suit, but more people are insured now than ever before. This is a good thing, Mr. President. Now I realize that Congress played a hefty role in this as well, but you must know that if they had a leader in whom they believed, perhaps your goal would have come to fruition. But, once again, your wish failed. I am thankful for continued access to affordable health care.
#5 – Your popularity
You have claimed time and time again to be the best at virtually all you do, but more and more of the American people are realizing otherwise. Part of me never even believed you wanted to be president; you just wanted to see if you could do it. See yourself in the paper every day. Hear yourself on the news. Go wherever you deem fit and have millions of people watching. You have proven yourself a megalomaniac. So more than anything, I am thankful for my fellow Americans, as their faith in you continues to drop. And you know it. I believe that it is the loss of the popularity contest that bothers you most.
You are a failure as our president, and for that, I am thankful.
