Day 527 – Letter to Dems and Independents: Mobilize Your Privilege and Do Something!

Day 527 – Letter to Dems and Independents: Mobilize Your Privilege and Do Something!

Image from USA Today

Dear Democrats and Independents:

July 4th is almost upon us, which calls to mind the Revolutionary War – when the United States reluctantly but decidedly asserted itself as an independent nation and freed itself from all the ways that Britain was, for lack of a better term, abusing us as its colony.  Our uprising was a direct response to how our “parent” country saw us as valuable only for our resources and our markets and was utterly dismissive of our new, American way of looking at freedoms and rights.

Essentially, to use more modern terminology, we got sick and tired of being punked.  And we fought back.

And remember further how we won that war?  The Redcoats came over and lined up in neatly dressed fronts, expecting some sort of gentleman’s warfare — and instead, we hid in the forest and sniped their troops, engaged in guerrilla warfare knowing that, in a fight for freedom from tyranny, there are no holds barred.  All is fair.  The stakes were simply too high for us to be “civil” any longer — especially when the opponent seemed better armed, better organized, and determined to enforce the economic and social rules it alone had developed and imposed upon us without our consent or input.

Fast forward 242 years.  Democrats and Independents, YOU are the American colonialists.  The Republicans, led by King George Trump and Generals McConnell and Ryan, are the British.  They represent a minority of us.  A VAST minority.  And yet, by clinging to the levers of power and outflanking us at every turn, they have entrenched that minority at the engine of power.  They stole a Supreme Court seat from the African American president they still cannot believe bested them — twice.  They have tried to undo all the progress that president accomplished, and are enacting a social system that fits the 1950’s, not 2018, based on the fantasy that moneyed white men will always get the last say in this nation founded by moneyed white men.  They are about to lurch the country even more rightward with another SCOTUS pick — made possible by the retirement of Donald Trump’s personal banker’s father (look it up) — and the very real possibility exists that reproductive rights, women’s fair pay, sexual orientation equality, and a slew of other ways we have tried to institutionalize basic, human rights in this land will be wiped away.  In the VERY near term.

When are YOU going to get tired of being punked?

When are you going to stand up and say that you’re tired of allowing a wealthy sliver of our population to keep pushing you down for their benefit?

Stop worrying about a fair fight.  These guys cheat and play dirty and lie through their teeth at every turn.  And while it is ideal to turn the other cheek and to be the bigger person, to continue to do so now is like lining up in a neat row while the snipers pick us off, one by one.

The gloves have to come off.  Or Donald and Mitch and Paulie keep laughing all the way to the bank (and the Supreme Court and the legislatures and the White House) time after time after time.

Time’s up, I’m afraid.  The revolution, if it’s coming at all, has to begin now.  You know what you can do — join a rally. Make phone calls for progressive candidates. Talk to your friends and neighbors to get them to be political, too.  Donate to your favorite progressive action group.

But for god’s sake, VOTE.

Vote in every election you are eligible to vote in, and do so with research under your belt about which candidates will stand up for the punked majority.

Time to take our fucking country back, pardon my French.  By hook or by crook.

Happy Almost Independence Day.

Sincerely,

Letters2Trump

Day 526 – Letter to the American People: Call the Con Artist-In-Chief and All of His Supporters Out. When It Smells Like BS, It Probably Is BS.

Day 526 – Letter to the American People: Call the Con Artist-In-Chief and All of His Supporters Out. When It Smells Like BS, It Probably Is BS.

Dear American people,

On the series finale of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, the concluding monologue has Jon Stewart warning us that “BS is everywhere.”

That was August 6, 2015.

Almost 3 years later, here we are, and the cow poop is flying all around us seemingly always at high speed. And it has taken control – we are becoming immune to the smell.

Donald Trump is the best con artist of his time. He once plied his skills to sell real estate and manipulate local officials, vendors, or buyers of his properties.

But how do we handle a con artist? Unfortunately, the elderly are subject to scams regularly and the AARP has a great article for its members to help them identify a con artist and how he plies his trade. It should sound all too familiar.

First, the con artist develops a persona: “Assume a false personality or social mask that makes it easier to pull off the deception. Swindling is really acting, and you play a character who will help you appear legitimate, confident and successful … even when you are not.” Check!

Second, “it’s about emotion, not logic.” He states his “first objective (is) to get the victim ‘under the ether.’ Ether is that fuzzy state when your emotions are stirred up and you’re so agitated that you won’t know which way is up and which is down. Once I have gotten you into this condition, it doesn’t matter how smart or dumb you are. Ether trumps intelligence every time.” Check (pun intended)!

And last, find the “perfect victim.” That’s us. Politically polarized, disillusioned, dependent on social media, primed to be scammed. Check!

Remember what we’ve been told:

Democrats do not support immigration reform.

I can’t prevent kids being separated from their parents at the border.

The media is the enemy of the people.

The Eagles were kneeling and are disinvited from the White House.

We have thousands of immigration judges.

My inauguration crowd was the largest ever.

There was voter fraud, millions of illegal votes against me.

Mexico will pay for the wall.

There’s more – and the hits just keep on coming from the president and his administration.

Now what do we do?

Call him out. To your family, your friends, to anyone who will listen.

Many will say it won’t matter, people believe what they want to believe. People stay within their own bubbles.

Silence is not the answer. Eventually, collectively, we can get people out of the ether.

Or as Jon Stewart put it, “BSers have gotten pretty lazy; the best defense against BS is vigilance… when you smell something say something.”

Sincerely,

Day 525 – Letter to NY19: Let’s All Get Behind Our Candidate and Push to a Win in November!

Day 525 – Letter to NY19: Let’s All Get Behind Our Candidate and Push to a Win in November!

Image from Twitter

Dear NY19,

As I write it is 4:00 pm, June 26, 2018 in the NY19 Congressional District. The polls are still open, so we have no idea who will win the seven person Primary and become the Democratic nominee who will run against No-Show Faso, a sobriquet earned by his unwillingness to meet in open Town Halls with constituents. Faso should be easy to beat: he was one of the original sponsors of the national concealed carry firearms bill; he was video-taped promising a very ill young woman that he would not take away the Affordable Care Act—and then he voted to do so; he voted for ending Social Security; and one of his biggest donors was Mercer, founder of Cambridge Analytica. He defended the abduction of children from their families by the Trump Administration by Fasosplaining that such young children could not be jailed with their parents.

I have enthusiastically supported one of the seven contenders: Brian Flynn, a man whose integrity, platform, and experience inspired my allegiance. I strongly hope that he will win.

But, if he is not the people’s choice, I will continue to work and write letters to elect the winner. Brian himself has already pledged to do the same. This district cannot take two more years of knee-jerk jerks who do the bidding of money rather than that of their constituents.

I will work for the winner because I know and respect friends and acquaintances who have been working for each of the other candidates. These are people I see often. I honor their diligence and sacrifice, their hours spent writing letters, going door to door, making phone calls, having gatherings, and attending rallies. I have stood next to many of them at these rallies. I know they are sincere citizen activists who are working to save this country from a Supreme Court majority stolen by the Republicans in a hardly concealed effort to strangle democratic principle. I have read their letters condemning the kidnapping of children. I have seen their local Democratic parties grow because their neighbors are inspired by the well informed and logically presented discussions of these citizen action peers.

Each of these people I know pledged early on to work for the winner of the Primary because that winner would be the People’s Choice.

…And here we are on June 27, 2018, and the winner of the NY19 Democratic Primary is Antonio Delgado. Congratulations, Antonio, Gareth, Pat, Brian, David, Jeff, and Erin. Most of all I offer my congratulations to the Democratic process.

Sincerely,

Day 524 – Letter to Democrats in Congress: We Need to Hear You. All of You. Loud and Clear.

Day 524 – Letter to Democrats in Congress: We Need to Hear You. All of You. Loud and Clear.

Dear Democrats in Congress,

As one of your constituents and as a moral human being, I am writing to you regarding the children separated from their parents at the border with Mexico. I understand that Trump, with a flourish of a big pen gripped in his teeny-tiny hand, ended the policy of separating families at the border. But it was clear to everyone when he did so that he completely failed to put in place a plan for reuniting the children and parents who had already been separated.  He ended a cruel practice but left a void behind. Cause that is just the kind of leader he is.

So I, your constituent, need you to take firm action where he failed to do so. A California federal court has already stepped in to set a timeframe in which families must be reunited. As my senator or representative, I need you to put your voice, your power and your convictions to work making sure this happens. I need you, my elected official, to make it clear where you stand on the immigration policy at our southern border.  I need you, in the summer leading up to the November elections, to make it clear that you stand on the side of humanity, human kindness and grace.

I need to hear your voice on this. Loud and clear.

Sincerely,

Letters2Trump

Day 523 – Letter to Mitch McConnell: Blocking the Hearings for Merrick Garland Paid Off For You Today. November 2018 and 2020 Can’t Come Soon Enough For Us.

Senator McConnell,

In the wake of two potentially catastrophic Supreme Court decisions today (one upholding the travel ban and the other overturning a law that required “crisis pregnancy centers” to supply women with information about abortions), we want to let you know a few things.

We will not forget about Merrick Garland.

We will not forget that you happily stalled his confirmation hearings.

We will not forget that you boasted about it after the fact.

We will not forget that you turned the bureaucratic machinery of one branch of government against another.

And…we will not forget to go to the polls.

We will not forget the havoc a weak, puppet-stringed Republican led congress has wreaked upon our country.

We will not forget how Republicans, like you, never really stopped backing the racist we have shaming the halls of the White House.

We will not forget your pale, phlegmatic responses to the horrendous things he has done and said.

And…we will not forget to go to the polls.

We pretty much can’t think of anything else besides that walk toward the November election. Toward that day when we, the people, get to start cleaning house. When we get to start fixing all the damage you and your cronies have caused to our nation domestically and in the eyes of our allies.

We can’t wait to vote you right out of office in 2020.

Start packing.

Sincerely,

Letters2Trump
