Day 425 – Get Used to the Heat, Mr. President. Not Likely To Cool Off Anytime Soon.

Mr. President,

We’ve now come to the part of the eventual winding down of your administration in which you have begun to attack Robert Mueller. Before this weekend, you avoided the kinds of statements you are now making. It is clear that you are making these statements in the hope that it will deter him, whip up the support of your base, or both. You are attacking the Special Counsel as the investigation looms ever larger and moves closer to your business dealings in Russia.

I’d like to suggest that you get used to the heat. While your base will accept any interpretation of what is happening that you offer them, the majority of the American people sense that your increasing desperation is a sign that Mueller is getting closer to the truth – truths that will bring down your presidency, and will free the American people from this living nightmare. You see, when you take the presidency by any means necessary, including those beyond the law and any sense of decent conduct, you invite the kind of scrutiny and doubt that have plagued you and your administration from day one.

You still have options, of course, even if you have no honor. You could choose to reveal everything that you have denied to this point, acknowledge it, and resign the presidency. Or you could wait. In either case, the end of your presidency is the likely outcome.

Sincerely,

Day 422 – Letter to House Republicans: You Failed.

Day 422 – Letter to House Republicans: You Failed.

Dear House Republicans,

You might think that ending your investigation into Russian interference in our elections is the safe move. If Trump colluded with the Russians, you would rather not know than have to face what that would mean. What’s sad is, you may be right. Willful ignorance worked out pretty well for George W. Bush, after all.

But yours is not the only investigation going on, and the longer those continue, the more obvious it will be that you gave up rather than really investigate and have to face some hard questions. Even that will be preferable, however, to letting Trump use your conclusion to try and shut down Mueller, however. Nixon thought he could cover up his misdeeds by interfering with investigations, and he didn’t have nearly as many leaks to worry about.

So if you want my advice, even though you called it quits, push to allow other investigations to continue without interference. It’s better to look like you just missed something, than that you were also complicit. Just a thought.

Sincerely,

Mr. President,

You may be right when you tweeted, ”They are laughing their asses off in Moscow.” But, not for the reason you think.  Your delusions about Russia, so prominently displayed on social media, have made you the laughing stock of the world.  You blame everyone else for Russian collusion in the election but never take responsibility for your own actions.

At a time when mass shootings are ripping the country apart, you combine sympathy tweets for the victims of Parkland with delusions on the Russian situation. Where are your priorities, Mr. President?  It’s time to grow up and stop acting like a petulant child who’s had their toy taken in the sandbox.  The country needs a leader who can protect us from senseless gun violence and not one who degrades lawmakers to shift the blame. How many times will you blame President Obama to shift the focus from you? That’s a silly question, because I think we all know the answer. Until you take responsibility for your actions, and not via twitter, Russia will be laughing their asses off, but not at the U.S., Mr. President, at you.

The whole world is laughing at your behavior, and we don’t believe a word you say. How’s that plan of making America great again going? How many times do we have to mourn the victims of violence who died preventable deaths? How many times do we have to lower the flags to half-staff in memory of those gone too soon? The ball is in your court, Mr. President.  We implore you, stop the petty Twitter wars and do something for a country that is wounded and needs help to heal. Help pass sensible gun control legislation and cooperate with the investigation into the Russian collusion in 2016.  Grow up, tweet less and truly lead a country whose ground is soaked by the tears of too many parents, brothers, sisters and friends who’ve gotten the terrible news that their loved ones aren’t coming home. Tweet less and lead more, Mr. President.

Sincerely,

Dear American People,

When the Internet started becoming a “thing,” we talked about driving the “information superhighway.” This metaphor evoked images of an easy, accessible, and organized method of gathering and sharing information through the network of computers. How naive we were. Information-gathering today is less an orderly, regulated, and organized process and more – to borrow a popular idiom in my library science program – like trying to drink from a firehose. Unfortunately, many have used this barrage to accomplish a number of nefarious (and some not-so-necessarily-nefarious) goals. The 13 Russians indicted today were engaged in this behavior. Trump started his presidency by famously attempting to reframe the facts about events. Yet while the blame for these attacks rests squarely on the shoulders of the liars, we should really look among ourselves to consider our own complicity in sharing this, well, fake news.

That is where the problem actually erupts, really. We have long had people claim that our leaders were lizard-people, but nobody ever had to listen and pass that information to others. Yet how frequently have we shared a news story, editorial, or memetic image without checking the veracity of its content? And, to be clear, I very much mean “we” in a manner that encompasses both the left and the right. While a very recent study has suggested that sharing misinformation tends to statistically skew towards the conservative side, it has existed on the left as well. I have shared things only to later retract them when I realized I had not done due diligence in fact-checking it ahead of time.

Thankfully, a number of libraries have stepped up to provide assistance in developing the skills necessary to detect false narratives from real ones. The University of Michigan, for example, has created a research guide to help people sort “fact from fiction.” Similarly, the Indiana University East library put together helpful infographics and information in a guide about checking claims and fake news. And, if you are interested in assisting in the dissemination and transparency of trustworthiness in mainstream news, the Trust Project has your back! We should all do our part to step back, take a deep breath, and fact check.

Sincerely,

Day 380 – Letter to FBI and Dept. of Justice Employees: You are the Frontline Defense. Stand Firm.

Day 380 – Letter to FBI and Dept. of Justice Employees: You are the Frontline Defense. Stand Firm.

Image from CNN

Dear FBI and Department of Justice Employees,

Please stand fast. We need you.  Don’t give up. Don’t leave.  You are the frontline defense for the country.  The next 13 months will be hell.  We need you to plow through it. This may be the hardest, and most significant, law enforcement effort you have ever been called to do. It’s all new ground.  We rely on your expertise, your experience, and your wit to help pull us through this crisis.

You have pledged your life to the rule of law, advancing justice, and upholding the Constitution.  In normal times this includes protecting us from terrorists (foreign and domestic), pursuing organized crime, solving heartbreaking kidnappings, and investigating a wide array of complex criminal activities.  Because of your commitment, talent, and hard work we have been kept amazingly safe from the very real and active threats from our adversaries.

Now we need you to stand together against the enemies who have infiltrated our government – the threat inside the gates.  The Russians, the Trump Administration, and the complicit Republicans in Congress know they must get through you, and the free press, in order to fulfill what appears to be a goal to destroy American democracy.  Like a mafia organization, they will do anything to establish a Trump oligarchy in the United States. There are no laws, decorum, or standards they won’t break. No lie is too big. No action out of bounds.  They do not respect the rule of law or their own oaths of office.

I sit in horror watching the attack on our institutions.  Unlike the crook, Richard Nixon, the Trump administration has a state television network. A network unhooked from reality and committed to pouring hatred and lies into the body politic – Fox News.  And, for some unknown reason (probably related to pay-offs or bribes or the overwhelming desire to destroy Social Security) Trump seems to own the House of Representative Republicans.  So here we are…

There seems no way to let you know, individually, personally, that the majority of Americans are on your side.  We see what’s happening.  We don’t know how to get the message to you that we are here for you.  We want you to hold the line.  We need you to add to your focus on external threats, the sad fact that the threat is down the street in the White House.

Now more than ever, we need your professionalism and commitment.  We need your best game.  Don’t be discouraged by the ongoing attacks upon your agencies.  The level of vitriol stems from the fact that you are effective defenders of the rule of law.  You’ve never been needed more.

Remember your oath.  Be proud that our enemies feel the need to target your efforts.  You, together, are a formidable power protecting all of us.  We appreciate it.  We appreciate it. We appreciate it. Take the attacks as a source of pride.  We need to come through this together.  History will be on the side of the FBI and the Department of Justice.  The House Republicans, in particular, will be harshly judged for abandoning the trust placed in them by the American people.  We are waiting for the first of that judgement to be dealt in November.  We need you to hold, we need you to lead, we need you to stand firm.

Sincerely,

Day 319 – You Can’t Handle The Truth, Mr. President. Not About Flynn. Not About Russia. And Not About Your Role in the Whole, Impeachable Mess.

Day 319 – You Can’t Handle The Truth, Mr. President. Not About Flynn. Not About Russia. And Not About Your Role in the Whole, Impeachable Mess.

Image from A Few Good Men

Mr. President,

You should know the saying “every time you point a finger at someone, there will always be three pointing back at you.”  Your tweet over the weekend that you were forced to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI was an accusation that speaks volumes.  First, this statement differs from your original statement saying it was a trust issue. Second, you have been saying all along that you had no knowledge of any Russian contacts with your team; by now saying you fired Flynn because he lied to the FBI, you are admitting that you’ve known this information at least since his firing last February.  Third, admitting that you knew Flynn had lied to the FBI and asking Comey to let Flynn go is a clear case of obstruction of justice.

You frequently emphasize that you are the only one who tells the truth – not the media, not the Democrats, not Comey, just you. America is listening to your truth now. All the finger pointing you are doing is only bringing you back to the center of focus.

Saying disparaging things about the FBI will not help your cause.  Dragging Hillary Clinton into this will not make your tweet disappear. You believe saying her name will act as a distraction and take the heat off of you, but that is not going to happen.  There are too many Americans who want the truth on you to come out. That is what Mueller’s investigation is about – a quest for the truth. And you can’t handle the truth.

Sincerely,

Letters2Trump
